It might not be until you start booking photographers for your wedding that you realize that you might want straighter teeth for those pictures. Luckily, if you are like most people, you have started planning your wedding months before it is actually going to take place. You do have time to straighten teeth before your wedding, even if it is less than six months away. As soon as you get engaged (or even earlier) is the best time to start straightening your teeth, but it is never too late to make an appointment with an orthodontist and discuss your options.

Here in our office, Drs. Gemmi and Middleberg are reading and waiting to help you get your most beautiful smile for your wedding. Not only do you want to look your best for your intended on your big day, you want to look your best in your wedding pictures. You are going to look at and cherish these pictures forever—you want to make them as perfect as you possibly can. Plus, having straighter teeth will give you a more confident smile, which can make this nerve-wracking day just a little bit less stressful. Here are our tips for the best ways to straighten teeth before your wedding:

Invisalign

You have probably already heard the Invisalign hype. And why not? It’s hype-worthy. If you’re looking for one of the best ways to straighten your teeth (at any time, not just before your wedding), you will want to investigate Invisalign.

What exactly is Invisalign?

It is a system of trays and aligners that gradually put pressure on your teeth, moving them into a more attractive alignment. The principle is exactly the same as braces, but you don’t have to actually get braces, which can be a huge hassle while you are trying to plan your wedding.

Getting braces as a teenager, when all of your friends have braces, is one thing. Getting them when you are an adult, and an adult who is planning a wedding, is something else entirely. You might already feel insecure and nervous, and sometimes, braces can simply magnify those negative feelings (though not for everyone).

Invisalign can be the better option, and because, with the right level of patient compliance, the treatment takes about the same amount of time as braces, this is a good option for those who want to straighten their teeth but don’t want to choose metal brackets and wires. There are also a number of ways that you can make the treatment go faster, including properly caring for your teeth and your aligner. If you follow the instructions of your orthodontist, you are going to see a relatively fast treatment.

Getting Invisalign twelve to eighteen months before your wedding usually means that you will have plenty of time to finish your treatment before your wedding day. Most engagements last about fourteen months, which is only a little bit shorter than the average Invisalign treatment.

Even if your treatment is not completely finished by your wedding day, you will have significantly straighter teeth and you will be able to get married and take your photos with confidence. Just finish out your treatment after you are married!

Braces

Braces may be the more economical choice, which is often important if you are putting a lot of money towards planning a wedding. Just like with Invisalign, it is possible to already be engaged, get braces, and get them off before your wedding day. It all depends on your treatment, how compliant you are with the instructions of your orthodontist, and what additional treatments you are looking into. For example, we offer AcceleDent at our office, which is a good way to speed up the braces process (and can often also be paired with Invisalign for faster treatment, too).

AcceleDent is a device that uses gentle pulses to encourage your teeth to move faster. It is lightweight and attached to a tray that you simply put in your mouth. This device has been shown to shorten orthodontic treatment by as much as 50%, which could be crucial if you are trying to straighten your teeth before your wedding.

While you might not opt for AcceleDent, braces can still be a fast way to get the results that you want. You might choose more traditional metal braces or you might opt for a ceramic solution. Braces are the most widely used method of straightening teeth and there are many ways that you can speed up the treatment. It is important to talk to your orthodontist about why you want straighter teeth, so that they can help you plan a treatment that meets those needs. If your orthodontist doesn’t know that you need your braces off by June of next year for your summer wedding, he will not be able to plan a treatment around that goal.

Which is better for me?

Which option of teeth straightening is right for you will really depend on your goals and, more importantly, when your wedding is. There are ways that you can speed up your treatment, but if your treatment is going to extend beyond your wedding, Invisalign in Philadelphia might be the better option (as you won’t be able to see your trays in your pictures). However, if you discuss treatment with your orthodontist and he says that you could have your braces off in a year and your wedding is fourteen months away, this could be the ideal choice for you!

Hi, I’m 14 and I still haven’t had braces, so my teeth really aren’t straight at all. The problem is that my mom is getting remarried in about 2 months and we waited till the last minute to get me Invisalign. I know that my teeth aren’t gonna be straight by the time the wedding comes, and I really don’t want my teeth to be crooked for all the pictures (I’m the bridesmaid). Any ideas?

Unfortunately, there is no quick fix for straightening crooked teeth, but don’t be disheartened. Even in just a few months, you will see some improvement and the great thing about Invisalign is that they are clear. So go ahead and smile proudly in your mom’s wedding pictures.
